Advantages of Air Source Heat Pumps

TPS Heating have outlined some advantages and drawbacks of air source heat pumps, explaining why they could be such a good alternative to boilers for your home. Give us a call on 07595 726546 or send us a message using our contact form, whatever works easiest for you.

Other than using a gas or oil boiler, air source heat pumps are a fantastic alternative to heating your home and supplying your hot water. They work by taking in the air from outside and filtering it into your home.

There are two different types of air source heat pumps; air-to-air pumps, which function by an extractor fan that absorbs the air from outside to heat your home; and air-to-water pumps, which use the central heating system to absorb the air from outside your home, using it to provide you with both central heating and hot water.

What are the advantages of installing an air source heat pump?

 Environmentally-friendly

Air source heat pumps are generally much better for the environment than conventional heating systems, which use the burning of fossil fuels as a heat source. If your were to get an air source heat pump installed, you would reduce your property's carbon footprint which is something that all homeowners in the UK should be striving towards.

Versatility

The scope for variation is another great positive about air source heat pumps. They have the potential to be powered by either wind power, or even solar power, instead of electricity. This makes them incredibly versatile sources of heat energy. In addition to this, air source heat pumps also have the ability of working as air cooling systems in instances of hot weather. This makes them a very versatile option for both the warmer and cooler months.

Cheaper home heating

As they're a renewable energy source, air source heat pumps use less energy than conventional central heating systems  and are usually cheaper to operate.

Are there any disadvantages to air source heat pumps?

At TPS Heating, we always like to try and provide a clear picture to our customers. That's why we have pointed out some potential disadvantages that you should consider, when air source heat pumps are in question.

They can be loud

Air source heat pumps can be much louder and noisier to run than other heating systems like boilers and radiators. Think of it like having a fan or air conditioning unit on.

Not sustainable for larger homes

If you have a larger home, then air source heat pumps need to be used in conjunction with radiators. They aren’t as powerful as gas or oil heating, so are likely to need larger radiators to heat your home properly.

Your home needs good insulation for them to work effectively

It is highly important that your home has a good level of insulation for an air source heat pump to work effectively. If your home is not insulated properly, then you may not benefit from the reduction in cost as energy will be lost through lack of insulation.
